Having smashed a glass ceiling at Australia’s AACTA Awards late last year, Mandy Walker has the chance to be the first woman to win best cinematography at the Oscars.
In more than 90 years, she is only the third to be nominated, following Rachel Morrison (Mudbound) and, last year, Australia’s Ari Wegner (The Power of the Dog). The strongest competition is James Friend for the lyrically shot All Quiet but Walker’s breakthrough last weekend, when she became the first woman to win for a feature film at the American Society of Cinematographers Awards, puts her right in contention.
